On December 19, just before Christmas and Şeb-i Aruz, I was in Mannheim, performing a concert uniting the hymns of the Christian and Islamic world. I really enkoy the smaller cities of Europe: they reflect traditions better, because they resist the passage of time a little better then faster cities. Mannheim was truly festive days before Christmas. A real pleasure to eyes! So was Heidelberg, the one and only German city not bombed . I had not been back in Germany for at least 8-9 years and the smell of warm wine and cinnamon cookies filled the air.
The concert was organized by two hard working members of the “Orientalischen Musikakademie Mannheim”, Muhittin Kemal Temel and Mehmet Ungan. They were most gracious hosts. I accompanied Bora Uymaz with my lever harp, joined by Mehmet on the ney and Muhittin on the kanun. We were greeted by a most enthousiastic crowd gatheres at the Liebfrauenkirche and I can not than enough those who made this concert possible. Most memorable!
